Golf Carts in the Village of Parma

Why Doesn't Parma Allow Golf Carts on Village Streets?

The Village of Parma has received a few inquiries about golf cart use within the village.

While golf carts are permitted in some Michigan communities, those areas have their own police departments to enforce state & Local laws, Perform Inspections and ensure safe operation. Parma relies on the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department for limited coverage but lacks a dedicated local officer for daily patrols, making it challenging to enforce golf cart regulations. The Jackson County Sheriff's Department informed the village that they would not be able to take on that role if the village passed an ordinance allowing Golf Carts.

After examining all options and after hearing from village residents, for and against the use of Golf Carts in the village, the village board decided in 2022 to not allow golf cart use on village streets.

Relying on an “honor system” for compliance is, unfortunately, not a sustainable, safe, nor practical solution. Additionally, the added cost to employ someone for dedicated enforcement would be a burden on village residents.
