Golf Carts in the Village of Parma

Why Doesn't Parma Allow Golf Carts on Village Streets?

The Village of Parma has received inquiries regarding the use of golf carts within village limits. While some Michigan communities permit golf carts, they typically have dedicated police departments to enforce state and local laws, conduct inspections, and ensure safe operation. Parma, however, relies on limited coverage from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and lacks a local officer for daily patrols, making enforcement of golf cart regulations challenging.

The Sheriff’s Department has also indicated it cannot assume this role if the village were to pass a golf cart ordinance.

After carefully considering all options and gathering input from residents both in favor of and opposed to golf cart use, the village board decided in 2022 to disallow golf carts on village streets at this time. Relying on an "honor system" for compliance is not a safe, sustainable, or practical solution. Additionally, hiring dedicated enforcement personnel would place an undue financial burden on village residents.
